If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a thousand times: A tired dog is a good dog. That truism doesn’t just refer to the physical exercise that comes from vigorous play with canine friends at daycare or a dog park. In fact, regular mental workouts are just as important to our dogs’ wellbeing as consistent physical activity.
It’s important to remember that most dogs were originally bred not just as companions for humans but as important helpers in all kinds of work. From pulling sleds and guarding homes to assisting on a hunt and herding other animals, our dogs’ ancestors performed a variety of jobs that kept them physically and mentally busy. Tapping into their drive to perform and please while giving them new challenges to meet and master is a fantastic way to honor our pups’ capabilities.
District Dogs is excited to announce two new training classes that are specifically designed to give your pup a physical and mental workout. Starting in April 2021, we will be adding Canine Agility classes and Urban Herding classes to our extensive training offerings. Read on to learn more about these two new training workshops and book your spot today!
Discovering Dog Agility
Capacity: 5
Cost: $300
Duration: 5 weeks; 45-minute sessions
Dog Agility is a fast-paced sport where dogs navigate a physical obstacle course with the owner/handler setting the pace, leading the way, and guiding the dog to the next obstacle. If you want to test your dog’s physical prowess while growing your relationship and communication skills, this is the sport for you!
In this introduction to agility, you’ll learn the how to guide and direct your pup through various obstacles as your dog learns to navigate tunnels, hurdles, tire jumps, weave poles, teeter-totters and more.
This 5-week course is perfect for giving your dog an energetic physical and mental workout. If your dog hasn’t mastered basic obedience skills, we suggest taking the Puppy Basics or Adult Basics class before starting Dog Agility.
Urban Herding
Capacity: 5
Cost: $300
Duration: 5 weeks; 45-minute sessions
Urban herding is an activity that merges you dog’s love for chasing a ball with their herding and tracking instincts. It culminates in a sport where your dog uses their nose to push and herd yoga balls into a goal… just like herding dogs moving livestock into a pen. Unleash your dog’s brainpower and instincts while building your bond and communication through urban herding!
In this class, you will learn the necessary commands to direct your dog to move around different locations of the herd, work at a distance away from you, push with their nose, and control the ball so that they can push it towards you.
This 5-week course is perfect for exercising your dog’s body and brain without overdoing it. Urban herding is a low-impact sport that doesn’t require the owner to run. It’s also easy on your dog’s joints—making it ideal for dogs of any age. Please note: Puppy Basics/Adult Basics or an equivalent obedience training course is a prerequisite for this course.
